Kitchen-y Stuff

Carol has a great sense of humor. If you know her, then you’ll agree. Which can be the only reason that she asked me to do this cooking/kitchen type thing. I’m such an inept, disinterested NON-cook that i don’t even know if I can complete this thing. So, where questions are not applicable I’ll make up my own. That might be fun. Here we go!

1. How many meals does most of your family eat at home each week? How many are in your family?

They eat as few at home as possible. There are 6 of us.

2. How many cookbooks do you own?

Too many (maybe 5)

3. How often do you refer to a cookbook each week?

Ha Ha Ha. Did you read that? how many times each week?! Hehehe.

Insert new question here: How many ways can you ruin Hamburger Helper?

burn meat

undercook noodles

overcook noodles until they taste like wet toilet paper

add milk/sour cream stuff and cook on high until it curdles and will give you food poisoning.

use frozen meat that stays in big ugly globs

do a ‘stir in idea’ that is too creative to taste good: any kind of pea or nut (yes, i thought it’d be ok. it was not.)

Answer: 6 ways to ruin Hamburger Helper

4. Do you collect recipes from other sources? If so, what are some of your favorite sources (relaties, friends, magazines, advertisements, packages, the internet, etc)

One time I tried Carol’s rib recipe. THat involved putting ribs in the crock pot, adding BBQ sauce, and remembering to turn it on. DOes that count? It was really good, by the way. My sister cooks and has recipes and I suppose every once in awhile I think about asking her for ideas or suggestions. I think she usually laughs and spouts off something nineteen hundred times more ambitious than i was hoping.

5. How do you store those recipes?

Ha ha. Not applicable.

Insert New Question here: How many kitchen fires have you had in the last year?

Two. The one I am responsible for was when I tried to make fried chicken. Big, big flames. The second fire was when Mike caught a nacho on fire in the oven  and it wasn’t as dramatic.

6. When you cook, do you follow the recipe pretty closely, or do you use recipes primarily to give you ideas?

I don’t do recipes.

Insert New Question here: Do you eat raw cookie dough, or brownie batter?

Yes. But I like to lie to myself and think of myself as someone who does NOT do these things. So if you were to ask me that question really quickly when I least expected you to, i might respond with an appalled, "Of course not!" Which would be a lie, because yes I really do. If no one is looking. But I always wonder if the raw egg in whatever I ate is going to make me sick.

7. Is there a particular ethnic style or flavor that predominates in your cooking? If so, what is it?
That white Hamburger Helper Hand – the one with the four fingers… what’s his ethnicity? Also, Mike likes cheese. Whatever it is, i smother in cheese and then my odds of someone eating it go up considerably.

8. What’s your favorite kitchen task related to meal planning and preparation? (eating the finished product does not count)
ooh, that one’s funny!

New Question: What do your kids say when you put dinner on the table?

Do we haaaave to eat that?

you cooked this, didn’t you?

how much do you want me to eat?

is this… meat?

is this the last meal of the day, or is there going to be another one later?

9. What’s your least favorite part?

all of it.

10. Do you plan menus before you shop?

no. (as if.)

11. What are your three favorite kitchen tools or appliances?

crock pot. ummm. i don’t have three apparently.

12. If you could buy one new thing for your kitchen, money was no object, and space not an issue, what would you most like to have?

one new thing… a new cooking thermometer. i keep forgetting to pick one up. mine broke when the fried chicken caught fire.

13. Since money and space probably are objects, what are you most likely to buy next?

new cooking thermometers aren’t big or expensive, so one of those i guess.

14. Do you have a separate freezer for storage?

yeah. it’s in the garage. i drove a Suburban into it last year, causing the entire door to dent in and then it wouldn’t seal properly at the bottom. But Mike fixed it, and moved it so i couldn’t run over it again and it still works.

15. Grocery shop alone or with others?

If it’s a Big Store Trip, all of us have to go. If it’s a little one, just Seth-4mth and I can go. His carseat takes up most of the room in the basket, so that’s my current challenge with grocery shopping. Besides, you know, hating it.

16. How many meatless main dish meals do you fix in a week?

Is an apple Nutri Grain bar a meatless main dish?  Caden-2yr and I go meatless a lot, but the others usually don’t.

17. If you have a decorating theme in your kitchen, what is it? Favorite kitchen colors?

Mike and I picked colors/materials. Here’s a picture. Also serving as my Get Real picture, since the kitchen’s messy.

18. What’s the first thing you ever learned to cook, and how old were you?
no idea.

Substitute Question: Favorite food? currently, zucchini

19. How did you learn to cook?

n/a

new question: what does Ethan-5yr say when Caden-2yr eats suspicious looking dinner placed before him?

He says, "He’s only eating that because he thinks you bought it at a restaurant."

Hey, I had to laugh about you driving into the freezer. Our garage door has a bend in it where I backed the van into the (oops, shut) door thinking I had already opened it. I think I was lecturing some kid at the time and got distracted. Anyway, thankfully my hub bent THAT back into shape and got it working again…sigh…

Wow — you have a GORGEOUS kitchen, girl. I’m loving those little lights under your cabinets. And your countertops are so pretty. I think I could get inspired to flip on a crock pot in a kitchen like that!

Okay. Wait a minute. I didn’t say anything about substitute questions, did I? Okay, so I didn’t say anything against them, either.

I did the drive-a-Durango-into-the-freezer once. It never did work quite right after that. We have a new freezer now and Jon put it on the other side of the garage…just in case.

I don’t think I’ve ever caught a nacho on fire though. That’s a good one.

Okay, I’ll do this one. I do like to cook, but haven’t been doing much of it since I started working again. This will be fun though since I have kitchen dreams dancing around in my head for the new house.

Kelsey, I’d say with that kitchen, you have no excuses!! :)

I do, tho, as my kitchen is so tiny it feels crowded if just one other person is in it with me. Oh, and there’s almost ZERO counter space. I have to take things out of the oven and set them on the FLOOR sometimes!

My favorite kitchen decoration is a hot pad with the Boynton cat on it. He’s wearing a chef’s hat and he’s not smiling. The caption reads, “Cooking. What a thrill.”

My feelings exactly…although it seems I do an awful lot of it!

K Kelsey, I’m believing the whole “my house is sooo messy”. Coming from an A.R. one, I’d say it looks pretty good. Plus, I love your kitchen girl – those are my color schemes! You’ll see mind soon from the rental house and be glad you have yours…I would love to cook there! Rachel Ray and I would have a field day. Of course, TiVo would need to be accessible to accomplish that! LOL

I never ask if someone is pregnant, or when they’re due. Ever. If they don’t bring it up, I’m not going to either. It’s just too easy to make a mistake and hurt someone’s feelings.

I’m sorry that happened to you!

Gorgeous kitchen! Love the replacement questions, the raw eggs haven’t killed me yet… I wouldn’t worry about it.
