It was a happy, happy day recently in the closet of Mike and Kelsey. Not for Mike, who was cleaning the closet. And not for Kelsey, who was having mini anxiety attacks every time Mike picked up a too small baby something or other and tossed it into a ‘give away’ pile. (Kelsey took it a bit personally, even though yes this is it and there will not be any more babies.) But it was a happy day nonetheless for Shoe Couples.
Everyone has estranged Sock Couples, thank you Stupid Dryer. But do you have estranged Shoe Couples? I do. It bothers me greatly. It bespeaks a reckless, irresponsible, careless attitude toward shoes that truly I do not have. And yet, I have had several lost shoes. For months. For years. It’s been an embarrassment, really. Who can’t keep organized at so basic a level that one’s shoes remain a happy pair? And the unfortunate answer, is, me.
But recently Mike cleaned the closet and in his wake were two Found "Sole" Mates. (No, not a matched pair, one a stripy pink, and the other a beige slide of luxriously soft leather)
Here, they pose. This was not where they were lost, because that would be dumb.
And, once they were happily reunited, I perched them atop a stool and they posed again, with their respective ‘sole mate.’
(Pink Stripey couple? only $5 at Shoe Carnival)
But, as with all Valentine’s Days, even the one in March in my closet for shoes… there is the odd one out. Still looking for The One.
One day perhaps the Shoe Cupid will strike again. Until then, I have Sock Couples to match (or at least toss in the general direction of the Sock Basket).
Tanyetta talks here of The Lost Shoe at her house. And? Even better? She tells you how to sign up for a year’s worth of free shoes. (Yeah, I entered. Did you even need to wonder?)

Sole mates! Ha! That is so funny! I suppose the one is wearing stripes because she’s imprisoned by her love? And the last one has a black “sole” because she’s lost without her mate?
3:28 pm
Very cute post!
Made me laugh.
Hey, got a picture of me up! Stop by!

Too funny!
3:42 pm
Judt in time for warm weather. Hooray!
5:11 pm
you have great taste in shoes, glad they found eachother!
5:14 pm
That is hillarious! Estranged shoe couples finding their sole mates. Very cute! And fun fun shoes indeed!
5:17 pm
PS – I totally know what moment you had regarding the baby things going in the give away pile. I had a moment like that last night when I packed up my little man’s sippee cups. Need them no more as we are having no more. So sad in some ways …
5:27 pm
Those shoes are really cute!!
Oh yeah, and the little story was good, too : )
5:48 pm
Oh my gosh how cute are those pink stripeys!!!! I’m so glad they are together again. I’m going over to Tanyetta’s now to find out about the free shoes!
6:04 pm
hehe I do not have enough shoes to lose one!! Oh how I used to love shoes…now my kid gets shoes and I live in flip flops…life changes everything!
6:10 pm
Ooooo, love those stripey pink ones.
6:53 pm
I too have lost shoes! I don’t know what happens to them, but I put away a pair of boots when the winter ends and when I return the next winter, one is gone. Same with sandals that I put away for the winter. I swear there are gnomes in closets that take them.
8:18 pm
Love your taste in shoes. In fact, I have a pair just like the champaigne colored ones, and almost identical to the black one–(although the last time I checked, I still had both of them). I’m beginning to think we are somehow related!
8:29 pm
OK. I’m the weirdo bookworm who’s much more interested in your books than your shoes! I mean, the shoes are cute — but do I see a Sally Stuart’s Christian Writers’ Market Guide underneath that Kristin Billerbeck book? Uh huh. You’re on your way, Kelsey.
Do you subscribe to Christian Communicator? It’s a publication of American Christian Writers. http://www.acwriters.com. Sally Stuart is one of the columnists who keeps you up to date on all the whirlwind of publishing changes.
I’ve just discovered Robin Jones Gunn — I’m reading Sisterchicks in Gondolas. So funny and totally refreshing spiritually — love it!!
9:35 pm
Oh, we have estranged shoe couples all over the flippin’ house! Almost no one knows how to put away a shoe around here. (she said bitterly)
Mary, mom to many
11:06 pm
You’re a smart woman for holding on to the lone shoes. I throw them away. Then when I find the missing mate, I’m crushed!
11:30 pm
So, so cute! I was laughing all the way. BTW, stripeys are darling. Isn’t Shoe Carnival just the best when they have those sales? Love it!
11:35 pm
Love the shoes. I have to admit I focused in on the books first too, then reminded myself… it’s about the shoes, it’s always about the shoes!
3:33 am
You are such a cool, funny, complex character! You make me laugh! And make me feel like I need to get out and buy some more shoes. I am WAY BEHIND on the cute shoe thing.
11:42 am
I, too, don’t have enough shoes to lose any. I’ve always felt a little left out of the “girly” stuff because I was never a shoe person. However, handbags? Oh, baby! Someday I’ll have to do a blog entry on all my purses.
As for baby things, if I ever see a day when diapers are no longer needed in this house, there will be much rejoicing!
12:59 pm
Thank! You! I thought I was the only one with this phenomenon. I actually found one of my favorite shoes behind the couch! Wha…? Was there a feisty afternoon I forgot about?
LOVE the pic of your shoes with your books – that really excited me since those are my two passions.
3:35 pm
Hehe, please send Mike over to do some searching
9:04 pm
ah, cute shoes! I lost entire couples – 4 of them. All at once. When the summer of 2004 was over, I put the summer shoes downstairs for winter storage… and never ever saw them again. We searched high. We searched low. We offered rewards. All four pairs are gone – and two of them were the cutest shoes ever. We’ve since moved, so I don’t hold out much hope of ever finding them agian.
sigh.
congratulations on finding your soul mates. Let me know if you find mine, ok?
3:53 pm
I love that your five year old boy is telling you to put things in place and keep it there. And then recommends the purse light. “you have to act now” how funny!
1:24 pm
I’m a purse-girl, mainly because my feet are too ugly for me to be a shoe-girl! But I know about the shoe because…ya know how kids outgrow clothes every other month or so? And family and friends kindly give you hand-me-downs in all sizes? Forces you to do a total go-through of all their clothes regularly, but I never get around to shoes. I recently cleaned out the closet that my 2 boys share and found 13 lonely shoes!! None of them matched each other. And you know what’s even weirder? 11 of the 13 were LEFT SHOES! Is their some kind of boy ritual that involves right shoes?
