Perfect Hair PlayGroup, Take Two

I went. Oh, yes I did.

I expected them to be dressed in their cute little Chic Mommy Attire, complete with accessories, just as before. I was excited, really, thinking that the brave mommies who wear necklaces WHILE holding toddlers might be there ready to be nice to me again.

What to wear? I couldn’t show up with Perfect Hair. They wouldn’t recognize me. I couldn’t look too… ‘put together’ after how ratty I looked last week. Hmm. I went for a look I’ll call Contrived Careless. The ponytail was there, but stylish, not sloppy this time. The shoes were ok, but I left all my cute ones at home that day. And i put on just enough lip gloss so that if anyone looked and thought about it, they’d conclude it had almost worn off. As opposed to being barely put on to LOOK as if it had carelessly worn off. (Yes male readers, there is a big difference, just take my word on it, okay?)

But no one looked. I was the only one who showed! The boys and I had a great time at the science museum all by ourselves, and I’m glad we went. The boys created huge contraptions from oversized tinkertoys, and drove around in little plastic fire trucks and swished their hands through a steam like tornado thing. Good fun.

So, no one cared about my lip gloss or my hair, and by the time we left, Contrived Careless was just plain Careless. And that was pretty nice, too.

My jaw is dropped! I know my MK homies wouldn’t diss you like that (I think)!

Yea…HM your last post says… “Except to invite me to come next week. Same time. Same place. (Same Hair, I assume.)”

You posted this on June 12 which was Monday!! I know because it was J-Lo’s bday!! And, today is Tues.

K, I re-read your post and you didn’t mention if you went yesterday or today so I guess I was stretching it.

I’m not trying to make you look dumb, but I am in complete ‘awe’ that this happened to my cyber-friend!! And, if you do have it right…I’m turning in my consultant license RIGHT NOW! Creeps!!

Heh! Being the leader of or local playgroup, I can soo relate with this post! I am always fearful of those times that only one person shows up! Sounds like you made the best of it and enjoyed the time you had :)

Our first Moms Night Out is sunday…. Ive been in constant prayer. :)

Glad you went, even though you were the only one. It took a lot of courage to step out like that AGAIN! Good for you. (I love “Contrived Careless”)

I’m going to try that Contrived Careless look, or at least tell myself that’s what I’m doing!

Glad you had a good time! I’m going to have to learn this “contrived careless.” See, I tend to attract weirdos, maybe if I do the careless thing they will JUST GO AWAY! LOL!

They didn’t show! How wrong. (But I bet you were somewhat relieved, huh?)

Man, that stinks! But at least you had fun with your kids anyway! I do that whole lipgloss thing everyday! and when I feel that I need to wear make-up, I do the whole “put on enough so it doesn’t look like I just put it on, since it is NOON, and just enough that looks like I don’t really care.” thing. Got all that? Whew!

Uh! What a waste of perfectly good lip gloss and stylish ponytail! How rude of them… but I know… you were secretly glad they didn’t show, weren’t you???

Oh no! DON’T GIVE UP! Seriously, it was probably a simple misunderstanding, not a personal insult!

“Contrived careless”. I LOVE it! That’s my everyday look. But, remember, my kids are older.

Why they weren’t there? Certainly that is a mystery, but it positively was NOT because they invited you (I know that’s what I’d be thinking and then I’d have to convince myself that I’m not that important).

But who cares? You and your kids had a good time; that’s great!

Contrived careless is so right on. It is exactly what I am going for when I put the touch of lip gloss and brushing my hair out before heading to the grocery store…just in case I run into someone who cares.

I am glad you and your kids had a fun time even if it was only you.

In other words, you went and did what you normally do when you go to the kids’ museum, probably looking much nicer than any of the rest of us when we’re all “put together” using contrived contrived.

I know you didn’t SAY that you were disappointed that they didn’t show, but the space between the lines sort of hints a bit.

Is contrived careless anything like shabby chic?

I for one would be glad that no one showed. It really would make the place so much more enjoyable without other people’s brats, ummm I mean kids, taking all the playtime. I count it a blessing! But at least you’ll know how to be ready for the next time.

Good for you for attempting the play group again. That’s very brave for you Holymama!

When my 10yo was 2 or 3, friends from church would set up playdates, and after much worrying about what to wear, how much make-up to put on, and how much gunk to put on my hair to make it stop frizzing, I would finally get to the park, and no one else would show up. We would have a blast, but my feelings would be a little bruised. After my second child, I realized that it isn’t always easy to keep the playdates. Life (and poo) gets in the way. My third kid doesn’t even know what a playdate is because with 3 kids, someone was always getting sick or hurt, or something was always coming up…and ALWAYS on the day of the scheduled playdate. (That must be one of Murphy’s Laws: kids will always be well when there’s nothing to do and get sick when something fun finally comes along.) Anyway, maybe life just got in the way, and no one knew that no one else would show. (Did anyone have your phone number?) Don’t give up, and don’t take it personally. Have you ever noticed that whenever we get too set in our ways, God intervenes to show us how wrong we are? Maybe He knows something we don’t.
Love ya’, Kelsey.

I think I dated their brother when I was 20, I wasted so much make-up on that guy. Sorry they didn’t show. I’m sure it was a mistake, or maybe you intimidated them.

I would call you chic…the kind of lady who could wear her hair over one eye and look COOL but very mommyeee at the same time. Since I saw you briefly this afternoon, I would say my above comment was correct. By the way, guess who will be in tommorrow. She was supposed to come in tonight but got stranded in Houston, so we may have to go pick her up from Midland tommorrow afternoon is she can’t fly here on standby. Later friend.
