Mike let it slip the other day in a conversation that we’re insured for car accidents up to a half a million dollars. This seemed… extreme. When would anyone need that? I mean, I tend to break things. A lot. And expensive things. I know. But still. That particular dollar amount was a bit insulting.
Then this morning I was in my giant monster truck – because through no fault of my own, the transmission on my Mommobile is broken and getting fixed – and I came up behind a little tiny taupe car a little too fast because I wasn’t really expecting it to be there. I didn’t hit it. Monster truck has great brakes. I didn’t touch it. It was just a little too close for comfort. And I was wondering why it had the word “Lotus” on the back in silver letters, when really that’s a word I associate with comfortable yoga apparel. And not with cars you often see in this town.
I realized maybe that half a million in accident coverage is JUST fine. In case you accidentally smash a Lotus with a monster truck in the burger king drive thru because you REALLY need a diet coke at 8 am. OH. So THAT’S when you’d need a policy like that. Yeah, okay.
I sent Mike a text saying, “Hey… saw a lotus.”
He’s out of town. I thought he’d be interested. You really don’t see cars like that here.
I left out the part about getting a little too close by accident. It was a text. No need to get wordy. I figure he wouldn’t be interested in THAT part.
He wrote back, “do not hurt the lotus.”
Uh…?
I didn’t write back about how insurance could handle it if I did, and by the way, YEAH, KINDA ALMOST ALREADY DID.
Apparently some things are just assumed and liability policies chosen accordingly. No need to discuss the little details.
* I was ABOUT to hit ‘publish ‘ on this and then i looked up Lotus prices and they are not NEARLY as much as I thought they’d be. I coulda ran over a whole herd of them and not maxed out that insurance policy.

Maybe it covers medical? I can’t imagine a little sports car or its driver would fare so well if it got hit by a monster Texas truck.

GW,
good question… i don’t know. will find out. the example mike gave was if “we” were to be in an accident that damaged a $300,000 RV. Always thinkin’, he is.

Is the plural for lotus “herd” or maybe something like “bouquet”?

Having once owned one of those RVs, I can testify that *anything* that happens to it is hugely expensive. We once paid over $500 to have it towed just a few miles. You do not want to be involved with an RV for any reason whatsoever. Nor do you want to own one. I wrote an extensive series on my blog about why this is true. but if you happen to hit one, you will be very glad that Mike has such good insurance.

hmmm, as a prior insurance agent with a high net worth company my first thought is that he was talking about $500k property damage coverage. So if that is what he meant then here’s a scenario to think about… You are driving along and hit a Maserati ($120k) that Maserati is stopped behind a Porsche Panamera turbo ($150k) and hits the Porsche sending it careening into the Starbucks ($100k) or like hubby said into a really nice big expensive R.V. now you have done almost $400k in damage and haven’t even stopped to think that in the back of the Porsche Panamera was a $15k sound system and the Maserati had ridiculously expensive bling wheels. So before you know it you are almost at $500k of damage and the owners of those 2 cars don’t want them fixed because they know that their resale values have now gone down. Instead they both fight to have their cars totaled (which is easy to do) and now they have to be replaced for similar like and kind but now because they are kinda rare they have increased in value and are easily worth another $20 each. Yikes!
Oh and what if you hit somthing like a race car trailer while it’s carrying a race car? It’s possible… Not that you would, but in general, it could happen to any of us.
However, if he is talking about liability you need more, way more. But he being the savy financial dude he is already knows that and I’m sure you do… Beware of Ferrari’s, lambo’s, Maserati’s, Porsche’s, etc… Lotus is just tiny and cute, not expensive.
That was way longer than I expected it to be… Thank God I got out of insurance…
