Hot, Cold, and Charmed

As long as there have been little boys in this home, there has been a strange phenomenon known as Night Night Charm.  All 3 boys were born with the knack for using this incredible technique to ward off their bedtime. As babies or toddlers or older, they just got CUTER at bedtime. Like, it’s time to start walking for the first time ever? Or talking? Or folding origami out of wet wipes or curing cancer or whatever else they were doing that was SO COOL that I could not POSSIBLY put them to bed?

A lot of kids get fussy when they’re tired. Mine get suave, funny, witty, charming, smart, creative, and anything BUT fussy or whiny. I enjoy them SO much that I want to remain in their company – this is the nature of the spell they all cast.

Tonight there was a glimpse of Night Night Charm. Seth-5yr didn’t really want to stay up. He’d had a t-ball practice and was tired. But he did want the Snuggie I was cuddled into on the couch.  He got out of bed and came over to me and asked if he could have it. He said please and he looked adorable. All big eyed and cold and really in need of a Snuggie. But I said no, go back to bed.

And he said,  ”But Mommy. You are my precious senorita.”

I don’t know where he got that. I do not care. I melted at this adorable display of Night Night Charm and folded him into a hug and laughed into his neck and kissed him to pieces and then I sent him back to bed with my Snuggie. He looked particularly smug.

I’m powerless against Night Night Charm. Always have been.

I don’t know why this house is SOO i-need-a-snuggie cold right now, considering the whole country is in the unrelenting grip of Hot and Heat and Some More Hot. I think it has something to do with air conditioner zones not working together. If you raise the temperature it goes WAY high and I just don’t even bother anymore. instead, I freeze and everyone else likes it cold.

Which is why I was telling my stepmom today that i spend a lot of time outside, even right now in the heat.

It’s a dry heat here so it’s not that bad, and I much prefer it to the refrigerated house. I was outside today, thinking how great it felt and how it probably wasn’t REALLY that hot anyway and then I noticed my phone was not working.

My phone is apparently way DELICATE.

It had a yellow triangle symbol and the word “Temperature” at the top of the screen and underneath it read, “iPhone must cool down before you can use it.”

I suppose my phone would prefer staying inside until the heat wave passes. Isn’t that strange? I’m telling y’all in case you also have sissy phones and just don’t know it yet.

i’ll leave mine inside tomorrow. Maybe with a Snuggie.

”But Mommy. You are my precious senorita.” So cute!!! And irresistible!

I’m not sure if I’ve ever experienced a dry heat. It’s always so humid here in the summer. This year it’s so bad that on the worst days you walk outside and your glasses immediately fog up. Crazy.

I’m not sure that ‘dry heat’ matters when you get into 115 range (as it has been here in Tulsa this week). I’ll stay in my refrigerated house – curtains drawn – until I’m forced to leave it, Thank You.

I love that being his precious senorita means giving him your snuggie. That boy was laying it on thick! It is powerful, the Night Night Charm.

My train did not have a/c yesterday. It was 110 degrees and it was at least 30 minutes before the air came on. It’s quite possible there was a yellow triangle on my forehead saying “LaLa must cool down before she can function.” It was hours before I fully recovered.

That makes me want to just pinch his little cheeks and tell him how cute he is! (Not that I have any clue what he looks like – and he doesn’t know me and that would probably scare him and he’d be all “Mommy – she’s a scary senorita.”…but I digress). Fair warning – the night night charm will morph into the ‘how to get out of doing chores charm” when they become teenagers.

Or so I’ve heard. I myself am immune to such things. No matter what my children say!

I have the grandkids who are NEVER charming when it’s bedtime (or naptime)!!! David Riley just goes obediently, but silently to bed. Eva is an absolute TERROR. She must cry. Then she must talk. Then she must sing. Then eventually, she will fall asleep.

I love that you are so easily moved by the Night Night Charm.

Geekwif,
ah, but your kind of heat you have will make your farm plans so successful! here, you can farm cotton and sorghum. right.

Becky,
115? ICK!!!

LaLa,
the only way those train passengers were safe from you is if you were also NOT too hungry. Then it would have been a nationally known incident. that train ride sounds awful. i’m glad you made it.

Mysti,
he IS adorable. so far, we’ve avoided the getting out of chores bit. maybe it’s because they’re still so little, but no one thinks to complain when i ask them to take the trash out or unload the dishwasher. loving this!

Mother T,
So Eva has her own little night night routine! maybe not the one you’d prefer, but for some reason, it works for her, right?! : ) not only am I moved by NNC, I’m totally blind to it until someone else sometimes will say, “Kels? You KNOW what he’s doing right now, right? That’s Night Night Charm.” And then I get it and see it for what it is, but I usually don’t care, because OH MY GOSH how cute was that!?

Wow, Night Night Charm sounds divine. Mine were an embarrassing, quibbling, whiny, sassy bunch tonight at my 4yo daughter’s After-swim-lessons birthday party. It was a bad idea to throw a party at 8pm, but I was desperate to get it over with soon.

I love when kids are super cute! Oh and I totally sunburned my phone. The screen colors have never gone back to normal. It’s really muted weird colors now. I don’t even have a wimpy iphone. I just have a wimpy blackberry that also prefers a/c…
